An interview with Guy Nottage

guy.jpg
Guy struts his funky stuff. Mick Jagger-esque.

Me and Guy Nottage (Front man of Hopton rockers 'Turnstone') had a brief chat on MSN for the site. Here is what was said:

Krow: Ok, Hello Guy.

Guy : Hello Benpi Poo Pie. *refering to the name I use on the Norfolk Gig Guide*

Krow: When is the Turnstone CD out and whats on it?

Guy : Well, we're looking at a late-June release, and its gonna have three tracks on it - the rock n'rolling 'Don't Be
Denied', the 60's tinged 'Don't Leave Too Soon', and the epic hard-rocker 'Something's Going Down.'

Krow: Cool! For those who don't know, who are Turnstone and what are they all about?

Guy : Well we're a 5-piece based in Hopton-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, with influences ranging from The Beatles, Rolling Stones
and Dylan, to U2, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and even New Zealand's finest exports since Jonah Lomu - Crowded House. We are Guy
Nottage (vocals, guitar, keyboards, harmonica), Lewis Hickin (lead guitar, vocals), Rafe Garforth (bass, vocals), Nick
Garforth (rhythm guitar) and, Britain's Sexiest Man 1986, Tim Eves (drum, percussion, vocals)

Krow: For all the young Turnstonettes reading what is the new daddy of rocks 'position of choice'?

Guy :*laughs* Well I'm gonna have to be boring and say missionary no actually...change that to doggy style.

Krow: Who is better, Ed Tudorpole or Richard O'Brian?

Guy : No contest, O'Brien. just for the harmonica and prevalent use of the word 'mumsy'

Krow: What is the most beautiful song you have ever heard?

*Guy thinks for a long time*

Guy: Well i'll tell you the most beautiful song i heard today, probably 'Beside You' by van morrison.'Beside You' if you weeeeeeel!!!!

Krow: Without using the word 'c*nt(s)' to describe other bands, why should anyone go to see Turnstone over other local bands?

Guy : Well to be honest, although it pleases me to see that there are a lot of bands in yarmouth at the moment, none of them
really have any considered ambition. Without selling out, we're playing songs that most people know and love, along with our
own which are very easy to catch on to and indeed love. Also i've never been impressed by any other singer in yarmouth.

Krow: Ooooooh, handbags out! Some would consider that cocky...

Guy: yep, well who do u think are good singers in yarmouth (bear in mind that it does have a huge effect on the sound of the band...)?

Krow: Erm...well, there are some bands with very different styles to you that have singers I consider good (and fitting of their genre) - Lynchberg, Tenn,  Still Crazy,  Chasing Red,  One Stop Earnest.

Guy: Yes I agree the singer from Chasing Red is good.

Krow: What makes a front person, in your opinion?

Guy : Good vocals, fantastic stage presence, an ability to hold the audience, and it doesnt hurt if you have long hair either!

Krow: Under what circumstance(s) would you sleep with Ron Atkinson?

Guy: Only if he gave me unlimited use to his sunbed, or maybe if he showed me exactly what a 'lollypop' is.

Krow: Where do you see Turnstone going from here? Will you be attempting to leave Yarmouth soon, or are you going to stay local for a while to come?

Guy: Well the plan is to gain management from the cd, who hopefully will take us away from the area, though if nothing has happened within the next 2years we'll definitely pack our bags and head for London anyway.

Krow: hmmm. Do you think dropping out of college has put you in a position that leaves you nothing but a music career? Do you feel there is pressure on yourself because without qualifications it is music or a job on the market?

Guy: well music is all i want to do anyway so that doesnt bother me, and music could be anything from being in a succesful band to being a music teacher or even writing music for porn movies! Don't forget i'm going back to college to do music in September.

*Krow did not know that!*

Krow: I'm all looking forward to hear 'Something's Going Down' filtering out of the cinemas of Soho!If you had to swap places with Garth Crooks or Garth Brooks who would you pick?

Guy : I'd probably go for Crooks cos i'm pretty sure when most people in England hear the name Garth Brooks they think someone's mis-said Crooks anyway, so you may as well be Crooks to rid the confusion.

Krow: any last message to the people?

Guy: Come and support us as pretty soon you'll have to pay to see us.

*Turnstone are playing at The Wrestlers Inn, Great Yarmouth on the 27th June*
